Chemical addiction disease is the nation's number one health problem. Not only is it a major problem of its own, but it contributes signifcantly to other health-related issues. Social, emotional, and economic impacts add to the seriousness of the disease. And yet, our understanding of chemical addiction disease is clouded by misnformation, social stigma, outmoded attitues, and myths.

Some of the common myths about addiction outlined in the 2006 newsletter of the Brain Institute at the University of Utah:

  1. Addiction is just a bad habit or indicates a moral weakness.
  2. People who are stuipd, bad, or poor are the only ones who become addicts.
